150ml of liminal Eigengrau matte acrylic paint
Limited Edition of 500

For the second time in as many months Stuart Semple has managed to defy science to create OFF BLACK, a colour that only existed in the liminal space between seeing and not seeing has been brought to life.

This Is
• The first (and possibly only) way to paint with the colour of nothing
• Super matte finish that seems to absorb light itself
• Limited to just 500 bottles worldwide

The Science Behind the Impossible

Eigengrau is what scientists call the uniform dark grey background that your brain creates when there's absolutely no light. It's the colour of nothing, literally what you "see" when you close your eyes in complete darkness.

For over 160 years, researchers have known this phenomenon exists, but it's only ever lived in your mind. Until now.

Seeing the unseen

OFF BLACK as it was known is an unnerving shade of grey that when it's painted out looks like it belongs in a world that was hidden up until now.

The only way to experience this colour was to close your eyes and surrender to the darkness.

Scientists discovered it's caused by spontaneous events in your retina that fire randomly, your brain creating visual noise when there's nothing to see.

Following YOLO's footsteps

OFF BLACK comes hot on the heels of YOLO, created when the impossible brand new colour scientists at UC Berkeley found the colour "olo" using their innovative "Oz" technique. They developed an intensely saturated peacock green that supposedly no human had ever seen before shining lasers into people's eyes.

Well, Stuart's not stopped there. While they're exploring new frontiers in colour perception, his obsession with getting impossible colours into the hands of artists who'll actually DO something with them. Colours that shouldn't exist but somehow do.

You know how this works by now. When it's gone, it's gone forever. And honestly? We'd hate for you to miss out on painting with the impossible.

Get yours before the void swallows them up.
